“Hysteria Kolektif initiates festivals and discussions through the medium of art and literature in urban villages as well as rural outskirts of Semarang. Together with residents, artists, policymakers, and children from various disciplinary backgrounds, Hysteria Kolektif also sparks residents’ engagement in exploring various issues. The concept of mutual cooperation or collectivity is a common practice among Asian societies, especially in Indonesia. The concept of mutual cooperation in the presence of alternative spaces attempts to compose collaborative practices between artists and the community to create free spaces for expression. Hysteria’s 20 years have been dynamic as a laboratory of social life. As an artistic expression, it has the freedom to try and perhaps fail. Sanento Yuliman (2020) wrote that “art integrates with the collective life, becoming an inseparable part of community life.” The documentary film Legiun Tulang Lunak – 20 Centimeter Per Years (Soft-Boned Legion – 20 Centimeters Per Year) attempts to summarize the work done by Hysteria. It targets important issues for collective attention, especially the environment. A 20-centimeter rise in water levels could be a disaster, but it is also part of how nature always receives and responds to human attitudes towards life.”
